Uh, oh, time to go. Char backed away from the reporters and scanned the crowded parking lot for the girls. Good. They were already in the car. She kept her voice light as she joined them. “Come on, girls, let’s roll. We’re going to Jonas’s place for lunch to check on the puppies.” Jonas had told her the entire story about his stint in jail. Leave it to reporters to twist it into something it wasn’t.

The girls’ chatter filled the interior of the car, and soon they pulled into Jonas’s long driveway. The paparazzi swarmed the vehicle.

“Lock the doors.” Before the girls, Char didn’t know she had hackles, but now they rose protectively.

Several reporters jogged alongside the vehicle and tapped on the windows, shouting through the glass.

Beth buried her face in Suzy’s shoulder.

Char removed her foot from the gas, and they crawled forward at a frustratingly slow pace. She forced her tone to brighten. “There is nothing to be afraid of, Beth.” She injected confidence into her tone.

Beth whimpered, and anger rocketed through Char. She gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white. After what felt like an eternity, they reached the house. The girls unlatched their buckles with a click, but nobody made a move to exit. Char cut the engine.

She squeezed her eyes shut. Lord, give me wisdom. She immediately thought of 2 Chronicles 20. When King Jehoshaphat was afraid, he set his face to seek the Lord. His words to the Lord poured from Char’s mouth, “We are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

“Huh?”

She snapped her eyes open and turned partway to find all three girls staring at her. “It’s in the Bible. It’s from a time when all of Judah stood before the Lord. Women, children, and men were desperate for God to intervene and save them.”

“What did God do?” Nat asked.

“The Lord instructed them to not be afraid because the battle was not theirs.”

“Whose battle was it?” Beth asked.

“It belonged to the Lord.” As Char said the words, a peace like no other descended upon her. The battle belonged to the Lord. “The people were told they needn’t fight, but if they stood firm and held their position, they’d see the salvation of the Lord on their behalf.”

Suddenly the jostling outside shifted as the overexcited reporters transferred their attention to Jonas approaching from the house.

Jonas held up a hand and ignored the questions until the crowd settled. It was like watching a kindergarten teacher reign in a room of four-year-olds.

Jonas spoke softly, and the crowd hushed, leaning in to hear his instructions. “If you let the children through without bothering them, I’ll give you a few minutes before going into the house. If one person says anything to the girls, snaps any photos of the girls, or reaches out to touch the girls, the interview is over, and charges will be laid.”

With surprising respect, the reporters lowered their cameras.
